The MBTI is a self-report assessment instrument developed by Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers and was based on the theories of Carl Jung based on his book Psychological Types, published in 1921 (Chen & Miao, 2007). During World War II, Briggs and Briggs-Myers identified a need for a psychological instrument that was based on understanding and appreciating tender differences which is how the MBTI development began. The development and discovery of the MBTI was a slow process, taking about 40 years.
The MBTI is found to yield an individuals strengths and general cognitive style preference which is thought to be useful in revealing personality type (Chen & Miao, 2007). The test is a self-report and consists of 4 outperforms including the Extraversion-Introversion (EI) scale, the Sensing-Intuition (SN) scale, the Thinking-Feeling (TF) scale, and the Judging-Perceiving (JP) scale (Chen & Miao, 2007). The EI scale measures the method acting in which the person more distributes energy (without or within), the SN scale measures the method in which the person prefers to gather information, the TF measures the method in which the person is more likely to make decisions, and the JP measure the method in which the person approaches life (Chen & Miao, 2007).
