The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Howard Roark, the male protagonist, is an intransigent clothes designer, who believes that a creators virtue is always reflected in his work. He is a hero in himself; he does not need people to call him one. An architect of modern style, end-to-end the novel, he is opposed and alienated in a society that blindly follows the traditional conventions which dictated the architectural realm in the past. Like, Dr. Stock dwellencen and Dickinson, he stands alone in his set and artistic decisions, neglected by a society that refuses to hope his colossally different assertions.
Through Roark, Ayn Rand projects her idea of an ideal man, of a man as he might be and ought to be. Roark holds the philosophical system that Mans first duty is to himself. His belief in objectivist philosophy is articulated by Rand as the concept of man, as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the example purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.This belief, although, also separates Roark as a protagonist from both Dr. Stockmann and Dickinsons multiple personas, as while both Dr.



Stockmann and the personas spy the comfort of belonging to people, and the intrinsic joy of being accept in society, Roark firmly upholds his views regarding belonging as he states I came here to dictate that I do not have intercourse anyones right to one minute of my life. Nor to any disrupt of my energy. Nor to any achievement of mine. I wished to come here and say that I am a man who does not exist for others. Roark is content with his single approach, and while he forms connections with certain individuals through and throughout the novel, their ultimate rejection of him does little to affect his ambition and belief.
