The character development of Amir throughout the novel shows more and more of Amirs cowardly characteristics, and his betrayal to Hassan. The novel shows the complexity of the characters motivations, thoughts and feelings by providing the reader with evidence to relate to Amirs cowardliness. Amir and Hassan are lift out friends and get along very well. time Amir looks for Hassan, after winning the kite tournament, he shortly sees Hassan get bullied by Assef and his friends.
Amir decides not to do anything and observes Hassan getting raped by Assef. Amir just watches in worry and runs away not doing anything. The significance of this is that Hassan would do anything for Amir because of their friendship, but Amir would not do anything even when he watches his best friend Hassan getting raped by Assef. After the rape, the book shows distance between Amir and Hassan, and Amir does not announce to Hassan. When Hassan emergencys Amir to read him a book, Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan, because he wants Hassan to stand up for himself and beat Amir.
