When Adolphes patent expired in 1886, countless saxophonists and instrument makers started making changes to the Saxophone. A French maker extended the doorbell and added a mention to extend the saxophones range downwards by one. Many other manufacturers changed the whole key work. Adolphe Sax had made the original key work very simple, which made legato passage playing very ticklish to play.
