Movie is one of many tools which are being employ to express social values or attitudes. Even a comedy can express concentrated social and ethical issues, and the funny elements of it help to provide viewing audience a lighthearted atmosphere to enjoy the whole picture. In order to prove my point, I decided to approach this hesitancy by choosing two comedies “YMCA baseball game Team” (YMCA Yagudan) and “Otakus in extol” (Koi No Mon) to examine their hidden social values and attitudes, and used these two movies to explain how comedy helped them to express the social issues.
YMCA Baseball Team
The movie is set in 1905. It is about the American missionaries program line a group of Korean men from different social backgrounds how to play baseball. This is how the first baseball team YMCA is formed in Korea. This baseball team is the symbol of tribeal pride during the matches with the Japanese team.
The Koreans’ resentment towards the Japanese during the colonial period is shown in the movie.
In 1905, King Kojong was forced to accept the Ulsa Treaty, which turned the Korean nation into a protectorate of Japan[1]. During the funeral of the dead dissenter, his daughter’s athletic supporter wants to pass her a love earn. But, he drops it by accident. That letter is mistaken by the people at the funeral to be the run short words of the protester to his daughter. It carries strong political connotation if it is meant to be left by the late protester. The unhappiness of the late protester towards the treaty is emphasized in the letter that is claimed to be his. This in turn shows that the Koreans are unhappy with the treaty.
