Diversity can be defined as differences in human characteristics and organisation in an organization (Mathis, 2011). While ripening up, I was non exposed to many diverse groups. I grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody. The community was the same people I went to church and school with. I was surrounded by the same type of people for the first 18 years of my life. My parents were non the type of people to travel and doing different things. We largely stayed at home. After I graduated from college, I move back to my home town and things were liquid the same. There has non been any type of diversity and the people are still the same.
I first experienced diversity when I was a freshman at Winthrop University. It was new to me and little overwhelming. I guess that was a result of my lack of exposure to diversity growing up.



If I was exposed to the different types of people and things when I was younger, it would not have shocked me as much. It would have prepared me for working with different groups of people while I was in college. My college make sure that the students were exposed to many different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs by requiring students to serve up 24 cultural events before graduation. It was a really groovy experience for me and that was really my first taste of diversity.
I was never comfortable working with groups of people who come from different backgrounds with different beliefs. The lack of education and experiences from my past was the main reason for that.
